Building History: Building Purchase

Since 2004, PEO Council had expressed its desire for Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) to own its own building rather than lease its premises. In 2007, Council provided additional direction that an appropriate high visibility building, centrally located, would enhance the professional image of engineering and PEO. Below is a time line of the events leading to the acquisition of 40 Sheppard Avenue West (40 Sheppard) and the future plans to fully achieve Council’s goal.

Key Milestones

December 2007

Council approves bylaw amendment to increase member fees to: publicly showcase the engineering profession; have the type of facility that a modern corporation needs; have control of PEO’s future accommodation needs; show PEO’s environmental leadership; and provide membership outreach and community involvement.

March 2008

Members endorse Council’s concept of using the building to build the image of PEO and the profession and confirm bylaw to increase fees

August 2008

Council authorizes the CEO/Registrar and President to negotiate the purchase of 40 Sheppard

March 2009

The purchase closes and PEO owns 40 Sheppard

June 2009

PEO engages architecture firm Sweeney Sterling Finlayson &Co (&Co) to bring the vision to life

November 2009

Visioning sessions are held with staff, Council, chapter and committee members to generate ideas for the building’s long-term future

December 2009

President Catherine Karakatsanis opens 40 Sheppard for PEO business

March 2010

Intercede Facility Management Ltd. (Intercede) replaces &Co  as PEO designers and project managers.

September 2010

Master Plan finalized
Master Mechanical Plan, Lighting Retrofit and concepts for the long-term build-out of office and meeting spaces are presented to Council

November 2010

Council approves budget for the Master Mechanical Plan, Lighting Retrofit and long-term build-out of office and meeting spaces

December 2010

BLJC is engaged to provide property management services

May 2011

New HVAC system operational
Building-wide lighting retrofit completed

July 2011

Tribunal and ERC Meeting Rooms operational

August 2011

Office spaces completed

September 2011

Official opening at September Council meeting

November 2011

Volunteer Business Centre opens
