Important changes coming to PEO’s Engineering Intern (EIT) program
The EIT program will no longer be offered to new applicants as of May 15, 2023. Since the required engineering work experience under the new licensing process must be acquired before applying, the EIT program—which was designed to assist applicants as they acquired work experience—is no longer sustainable in its current form.
We are pleased to continue to support current P.Eng. applicants enrolled in the EIT program. Current EITs may remain in the program as long as they continue their current licensing process.
We understand the value the EIT designation holds for prospective applicants, as well as engineering employers and local chapters. As such, PEO will consult with our stakeholders to determine other options for prospective applicants seeking to gain experience.
Please continue to monitor this webpage and the FARPACTA webpage for more information as it becomes available.
New online P.Eng. application system
As of July 11, 2022, PEO has implemented a new, fully online P.Eng. application system through the PEO portal. New applicants will need to create an account to access the PEO portal. Once you have registered for an account, you may log in and navigate to the application tab to start the P.Eng. licensing application.
PEO’s Engineering Intern (EIT) program provides guidance and assistance to engineering graduates as they acquire the 48 months of acceptable engineering work experience, including annual reviews of experience to ensure that an applicant is “on the right track” for licensing. EIT program benefits include:
-
the opportunity to receive detailed, confidential, annual work experience reviews;
-
eligibility to participate in PEO’s Licensure Assistance Program;
-
access to Engineering Dimensions, PEO’s official journal;
-
opportunities to attend PEO and PEO chapter EIT seminars;
-
the opportunity to join a PEO chapter, attend meetings and network with professional colleagues;
-
email notices of events or items of interest pertaining to your development into a licensed engineer;
-
access to the PEO’s online portal;
-
the opportunity to participate in online discussions with other PEO members on the association’s LinkedIn discussion group; and
-
the opportunity to join the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers and participate in their member-only services, such as insurance and investment plans, and online Career Centre.
How to Enroll
To enroll in the EIT program, you must be an applicant for licensure – meaning you have met the academic requirements of licensure (e.g. graduated from a CEAB-accredited program). You can apply for licensure and enroll in the program as soon as you graduate by filling out the Application for Licence and checking the appropriate box in the Engineering Intern (EIT) Program section of the application form.
As of May 1, 2019, if you apply for your licence within six months of graduation, PEO will credit your licence application fee as well as the cost of your first year’s membership in the Engineering Intern (EIT) Program (if you enrol) towards payment of your registration and initial P.Eng. licence fees once you have been approved for a licence. Learn more about the Financial Credit Program.
Note: Changes to the Engineering Intern Financial Credit Program (FCP) came into effect on May 1, 2019. As of this date, eligible participants will have the cost of their application fee and first year of enrollment in the EIT program (should they have chosen to enroll) credited towards payment of their registration and initial P.Eng. licence fees once they have been approved for a licence. Prior to May 1, 2019, eligible candidates had their application fee and first year of enrollment in the Engineering Intern (EIT) program immediately waived.
Who is eligible?
Applicants who hold an undergraduate degree from a CEAB accredited program are eligible to register in PEO's Engineering Intern (EIT) Program and may do so by and checking the appropriate box in the Engineering Intern (EIT) Program section of the application form. If you have already applied for licensure and would now like to enroll in the EIT program, please send a written request to your admissions representative or to eit@peo.on.ca.
An applicant who graduated from a non-CEAB school is eligible to enroll in the EIT program when they have met the academic requirements for a licence prescribed by this Regulation or be in the process of completing the examinations required by the Academic Requirements Committee in order to meet those requirements.
Fees
The annual fee for the EIT program is $90 + HST (total $101.70) and is in addition to the application fee. Do not include the EIT fee with this application; applicants who register for the EIT program will be invoiced separately.
Note: All PEO fees have changed as of May 1, 2019. Applications received after this date, as well as examinations, are subject to the new fees. Annual renewals of all licences, certificates of authorization, engineering intern membership, and consulting engineer designations invoiced after May 1, 2019 will reflect the new rates. Click here for PEO’s fee schedule as of May 1, 2019.
Please note that the EIT program does not place people in work situations, however, participants can attend chapter events where they can meet, socialize and network with professional engineers.
