Engineering regulator honours long-time Ottawa volunteer for outstanding leadership in the profession and community

PRESS RELEASE

Toronto – (May 13, 2019) – For his valuable voluntary contributions to the community and engineering profession, William (Bill) Jackson, P.Eng., FEC, of Ottawa, has been named an Officer of the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) Order of Honour. He was inducted into the Order at a May 3 gala in Toronto.

Jackson began volunteering in 1984, starting with work on PEO’s Professional Practice Committee where he helped develop standards of qualification and practice. He ultimately chaired two related subcommittees where he helped develop two influential guidelines: The Use of Computer Software Tools by Professional Engineers and the Development of Computer Software Affecting Public Safety and Welfare and Professional Engineers Providing Communication Services.

As an Experience Requirements Committee (ERC) member, he advocated for practitioners in emerging disciplines, such as communications and software engineering, promoting licensure of candidates in these fields. As a member of the joint ERC-Academics Requirements Committee group formed in 2015, he helped develop the limited licence application process.

Jackson encourages others to get involved to help advance the profession. “PEO must depend on existing volunteer practitioners to provide the skills and guidance to frame and enforce the regulatory framework of the profession,” he says.

The Order of Honour pays tribute to individuals who have rendered conspicuous service to the engineering profession. The rank of Officer is bestowed upon those who have served the profession for many years and whose sustained leadership has contributed greatly to its operation or improvement in its status.
