About

PEO Mississauga Chapter

The Mississauga Chapter is home to almost 10,000 Professional Engineers and EITs.

Professional Engineers Ontario, or PEO, is the regulatory body that licenses professional engineers in Ontario. PEO sets standards for and regulates the practice of professional engineering in the province.

Under the Professional Engineers Act, PEO has the mandate to serve and protect the public interest where the practice of engineering is concerned. PEO enforces compliance with the Act so that only those with a licence may practice engineering or advertise their engineering services. The association also disciplines engineers and companies that fail to maintain the profession’s standards.

We do not have an office as we are a local organization made up of volunteers to run events for registered Engineering Interns (EIT) and Professional Engineers (P. Eng.) of Mississauga. We are an essential part of PEO and some of the things we do include PEAK seminars, technical tours, networking, social events, conferences, and new P. Eng. licence presentation ceremonies.

Professional Engineers Ontario fulfills the same role the College of Physicians and Surgeons does for physicians and the Law Society of Upper Canada for lawyers.

Mississauga Chapter committees

  1. The purpose of this committee is to review/revisit the existing chapter’s by-law and recommend addition, deletions and amendments in existing rules and make new laws according to requirements, the proposed changes are circulated to the executive board members ahead of the meeting to give members sufficient time to read and comment. The proposed changes are tabled in front of the committee for discussion and acceptance, the bylaws are approved by the majority at an official board meeting that has a quorum of executive members in attendance.

The focus of the committee is to improve the functioning and  governance of the board working. To avoid any conflict all the changes/modifications in the by-law will be adopted with consultation of head office.

    1. The by-laws committee makes note of updates needed throughout the year and creates revised drafts regularly.
    2. The bylaw committee is responsible for recommending the modification in rules which are essential for good governance like procedure of selecting the office bearer, removing the member, appointing auditors, and organizing events are some to mention.

The committee is always open to considering the suggestion given by any member.

The current Mississauga Chapter's by-law can be found here.

  2. Purpose: To ensure efficient communication to the chapter, from the chapter, and within the chapter.

Communication is one of the most important aspects of operation of any organization.

Different types of communication media are used to deliver information, such as the Web portal, Email, Social Media, and Newsletters. The process of communication occurs in the following directions: chapter board to members, members back to the board, as well as between members themselves. It is our goal to ensure that all three directions are addressed.

We will try our best to deliver information to our audience fresh, immediately after it has been released. News, photos, board minutes, articles, publications, comments, these are just a few types of the information that we are delivering to you.

If you have ideas on how to improve communication in our chapter, please contact us via email at Support.

  5. Purpose: To administer the Government Liaison Program that was created by PEO to let the government hear the voice of engineers.

Liaison between the mayor and local councilors, MPPs, and MPs with PEO to impress the role of PEO as a regulatory body for engineering practices in Ontario. The committee meets with all levels of the government to inform them about the role of PEO and gather information about engineering projects and activities undertaken by the government that may impact the regulation of the profession.

The Government Liaison Program engages members in a number of initiatives through a comprehensive three-pronged approach:

    1. Facilitating strong, on-going relationships between chapter members and their local MPPs
    2. Actively monitoring and taking action on policy proposals and upcoming legislation that could affect PEO and the Professional Engineers Act
    3. Providing communications and policy support to express PEO policy positions to government policymakers when required.

Ultimately, the long term desire is that involvement in the Government Liaison Program will enable the profession’s voice to be represented directly at the decision-making table.

  8. Purpose: The Licensure Assistance Program (LAP) gives the opportunity for experienced licensed professionals (Guides) to transfer their skills and knowledge to aspiring EITs (Interns) pursuing their engineering license in accordance with the requirements and process of PEO.

Licensing Assistance Program (LAP) is a process for the casual transmission of knowledge, motivation and support perceived by the intern as relevant to career and/or professional development. LAP provides interns with skills they may traditionally have to acquire through trial and error and costly mistakes. Guides help interns to obtain their P.Eng. License by providing their engineering expertise but are not expected to be career counselors or to find jobs for the interns.

Professional Engineers Ontario – Mississauga Chapter (PEO-MC) has started a voluntary assistance program where experienced professional engineers guide other interns who are going through the licensure process. Guides support interns by giving them advice and guidance to help them settle into the engineering profession.

    Objectives

LAP is a formal relationship between a guide and an intern with mutually agreed-upon, clearly defined goals for the interns. Guides can specifically help guide the interns through the process of obtaining the Professional Engineering License (P.Eng.).
The relationship, however, should be between two individuals who do not have a direct reporting relationship, but rather a relationship in which coaching and guidance can be provided in a non-judgmental way

    Who can be a guide?

Guides are professionals who have engineering knowledge and business experience to provide guidance to interns to help them obtain P.Eng. License and settle into the engineering profession.

    Benefits of joining LAP:

    • Helping an intern to receive P.Eng licence
    • Understanding other cultures
    • Making a difference in someone’s life
    • Learning about yourself
    • Having fun!

    Criteria for joining LAP:

    • Having P. Eng licence
    • Having engineering knowledge and business experience
    • Living in Mississauga area

    Who can be an intern?

Interns are people who have the engineering knowledge, language and willingness to succeed in their engineering branch but need guidance and advice to obtain P.Eng. Licence.

By working with a guide, an intern can achieve the following:

    • Understanding of the Canadian workplace culture
    • Selecting engineering skills upgrading programs
    • Obtaining guidance through the licensure process
    • Improving professional terminology
    • Locating technical publications, seminars, and workshops on recent developments in the engineering field
    • Identifying the skills required in the market demand
    • Establishing professional network

    Criteria for joining LAP:

    • Completion of the academic requirement for licensure
    • Passed or registered for Professional Practice Examination (PPE)
    • Living in the Mississauga area

  9. Starting January 2023, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) will become a required component for all Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) license holders (both practicing and non-practicing) to maintain their license every year. The mandatory continuing professional development (CPD) program is based on its current optional Practice Evaluation and Knowledge (PEAK) program. It can be ongoing informal and formal learning that allows professional engineers to keep their knowledge and skills relevant and on par with today’s rapidly developing work environment.

The existing voluntary PEAK program will be discontinued as PEO transitions toward the mandatory CPD program. Engineers must complete the mandatory CPD program every year and follow a certain protocol to log the required hours that are associated with their discipline.

Mississauga PEAK/CPD committee will is here to help members through this process of completing their CPD and answer questions.
