Derek Van Ee, P.Eng., FEC
In his youth, Derek Van Ee was always building things and solving problems.
For him, a civil engineering career was a natural fit. Equipped with degrees from the University of Waterloo and the University of Toronto, Derek began volunteering with PEO soon after receiving his licence, playing a key role in the long-term success of the Lake Ontario Chapter as a member of its executive for the past 15 years.
He has served in several executive positions with the chapter, including vice chair, chair and past chair. In these roles, he has been a steady and guiding force, providing support and empowering new board directors and volunteers. Derek’s accomplishments include: setting up joint PEO and Ontario Society of Professional Engineers events; developing the chapter website; and improving the communication of events and meetings to chapter members.
Derek is also an avid promoter of engineering to local students. He initiated the Durham Popsicle Bridge Competition in 2006, an event that reached out to hundreds of area students and their parents. The contest has since grown to become a signature National Engineering Month event that averages 70 to 80 teams and more than 150 participants each year.
For his commitment to making a difference in the profession, PEO is proud to invest Derek Van Ee as a Member of the Professional Engineers Ontario Order of Honour.
