Performance Standards

Performance standards provide benchmarks to help practitioners determine the expected level of service.

While practitioners are expected to use professional judgment in performing their work, the standards describe only the required outcome of a practitioner’s activities, leaving the methods to the discretion of the engineer.

Practice Standard: Engineering Inspection for Tower Cranes

PEO updated and improved its Engineering Inspection for Tower Cranes practice standard to reflect the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development’s (MLITSD) recent regulation changes and common industry practices. Effective December 14, 2024, the revised practice standard is referenced under O.Reg. 260/08 (Performance Standards) of the Professional Engineers Act

The practice standard prescribes responsibilities for professional engineers carrying out review of tower cranes as required by Ontario Regulation 213/91 under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Five subsections of O.Reg. 260/08 now detail how engineers are to perform the new, expanded scope and frequency of tower crane inspections to improve public safety.
