How we Serve and Protect the Public Interest

PEO's mandate, as described in the Professional Engineers Act, is to ensure that the public is protected and that individuals and companies providing engineering services uphold a strict code of professional ethics and conduct.

PEO protects and serves the public by:

  • ensuring all licensed professional engineers are qualified – and by licensing all who qualify;

  • disciplining professional engineers found guilty of professional misconduct;

  • taking action against unlicensed individuals who illegally describe themselves as engineers. Similarly, the association can prosecute companies or entities who illegally provide engineering services to the public;

  • investigating all complaints brought to it about unlicensed, unprofessional, inadequate, or incompetent engineering services;

  • conducting disputes resolution and hearings;

  • preparing performance guidelines as benchmarks for quality of service in the engineering profession; and

  • preparing performance standards in regulation.

Working with a Professional Engineer

Ultimate responsibility for engineering work requires a professional engineer. While research, testing and drawing may be delegated to others, only the professional engineer can take responsibility for engineering work that affects public health.

Complaints and Illegal Practice

To protect the public, PEO investigates all complaints brought to it about unlicensed, unprofessional, inadequate, or incompetent engineering services. It also takes action against unlicensed individuals who illegally describe themselves as engineers.

Tribunals and Hearings

PEO has four bodies that deal with disputes resolution and hearings, ranging from hearing allegations of professional misconduct to mediating fee disputes between licence holders and clients.

Practice Evaluation and Knowledge (PEAK) program

PEO’s Practice Evaluation and Knowledge (PEAK) program is an annual program designed to improve the association’s data about its practitioners’ engineering practice profiles while encouraging individualized continuing knowledge development.
