Donald Anderson, P.Eng

Management

Through three decades at Ontario Hydro, Donald Anderson has made significant contributions to the nuclear power industry in Canada. In 1993, Anderson became general manager, nuclear, overseeing operations, maintenance, engineering, construction, nuclear safety, purchasing and finance, and assuming responsibility for 65% of the electricity used in Ontario. As vice president, design and construction branch, from 1991-1993, he helped resolve the technical concerns threatening to delay completion of the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station, so that the four units could be placed in service. To get the station up and running, Anderson used a "bottom up" management style that harnessed the problem-solving capacity of the station's employees by placing the decision-making process in their hands. In 1984, he was asked to create Ontario Hydro's "first-of-its-kind" New Business Ventures Division. During the six years he managed the division, Engineer Anderson sent hundreds of Ontario Hydro employees world wide to sell the utility's expertise in producing and maintaining electric power. This enhanced Canada's international reputation as a leader in hydroelectric and nuclear power technology. Before that, he was project manager of Bruce Nuclear Power Development, Generation Projects Division, where he was responsible for the engineering and construction of the four-unit Bruce Nuclear Generating Station B.
