Gerhard Herget, P.Eng
As Head of the Instrument Development Section at the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET), Dr. Herget's work on underground stability issues has contributed to the safety and efficiency of Canadian mining and to Canada's international reputation in the field of rock mechanics. His research on ground stresses in the Canadian Shield enabled engineers to improve the safety of mine workers and enhance the economic viability of mineral reserves by developing better mine sequencing strategies. This work has resulted in the establishment of an information database that has found widespread application. In 1986, Dr. Herget designed and built new sensors to determine ground conditions and to monitor rock movements during underground mining operations. He has received three patents related to these designs. His research on potash mining has extended mine life and increased potash recovery
