Barrie Engineer Recognized for Ongoing Contributions to Enhance Visibility of the Engineering Profession

PRESS RELEASE

Toronto – (April 27, 2015) – For his contributions to the engineering profession through his extensive involvement in chapter and committee activities, Christopher Yuen Fun Kan, P.Eng., FEC, of Barrie, has been named an Officer of the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) Order of Honour. He was inducted into the Order at a gala on April 24 in Toronto.

His dedication to chapter affairs has been inspiring and contagious. He served on PEO’s Porcupine/Kapuskasing Chapter executive from 1993-1995 and from 2004-2008, including two terms as chair. That chapter’s volunteers face some extra challenges, as it is one of the largest chapters geographically, yet one of the smallest in its membership. Despite this situation, chapter events were always well attended during Kan’s tenure on the executive, when it wasn’t unusual to see 75 per cent of chapter members attend major affairs.

A passionate advocate of education outreach initiatives, Kan helped the chapter form a lasting partnership with Science Timmins, a volunteer-run charity that promotes science and technology throughout northeastern Ontario.

He was also successful in advancing the work of PEO’s Government Liaison Program. Local politicians and city officials frequently participated in chapter events, including licensing ceremonies at which newcomers to the profession often received their certificates from a prominent member of the community, such as the mayor.

Christopher has also served on the association’s Advisory Committee on Volunteers since 2010, chairing it twice.

He says he hopes that, by working together, we will leave a better world than the one we entered into.

The Order of Honour pays tribute to individuals who have rendered conspicuous service to the engineering profession. The rank of Officer is bestowed upon those who have served the profession for many years and whose sustained leadership has contributed greatly to its operation or improvement in its status.
