Chatham Engineer Recognized for Ongoing Contributions to Raise Awareness of the Engineering Profession

PRESS RELEASE

Toronto – (April 25, 2017) – For her contributions to the engineering profession through her extensive involvement in education outreach and mentoring activities, Andrea Winter, P.Eng., FEC, of Chatham, has been named a Member of the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) Order of Honour. She was inducted into the Order at a gala on April 21 in Thunder bay.

A tireless volunteer with PEO’s Chatham-Kent Chapter, Winter is widely regarded as an exemplary ambassador for the profession in her community and as a mentor to new engineers at her employer, Dillon Consulting Limited.

After graduating from the University of Guelph and moving to Chatham to start her engineering career, Winter’s volunteer service with PEO began by assisting with the chapter’s curling bonspiel. Since then, she has embraced volunteering and served in several capacities with the chapter, including certificate coordinator, vice chair, chair and secretary. She also actively promotes engineering among students and new graduates, including organizing design competitions, science fairs and engineering PA day camps.

“Volunteering as an engineer gives me a chance to share my experience with others and encourage them to consider this as a career option,” she says. “Through volunteering for education outreach, I feel invigorated teaching young students how fun a career in engineering can be. There is always a student who initially knows nothing about our career who, by the end of the day, is excited to learn more about what we do and how we do it. I want young females and males to feel that this career is available for all of them to explore.”

The Order of Honour pays tribute to individuals who have rendered conspicuous service to the engineering profession. The Member designation honours those who have served the engineering profession by contributing substantially to its operation or improvement in its status.
