Toronto – (April 26, 2018) – In recognition of her role as an exemplary ambassador for the profession in the local community, Stela Stevandic, P.Eng., FEC, PPM, of London, Ontario, has been named a Member of the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) Order of Honour. She was inducted into the Order at an April 20 gala in Toronto.
Stevandic first volunteered with PEO in 2005 on the University of Western Ontario’s Engineering Career Navigator—a resource to assist first-year engineering students choose a discipline. Since then, she has been an active volunteer, supporting the London Chapter as chair, vice chair and secretary, as well as serving on PEO’s Repeal of the Industrial Exception Task Force.
A valued leader in the profession, Stevandic created and chaired many chapter committees, including those for the Government Liaison Program, Mathletics and women in engineering. In fact, her attention to detail and selection of engaging keynote speakers have made the Women in Engineering Committee events some of the most successful within the chapter.
Stevandic helped connect the profession to the community in a variety of ways: she organized chapter town hall meetings; created a partnership with the Project Management Institute for local events; and developed a partnership with PEO and the London Chamber of Commerce. “Promoting engineering in the local community is what I find most rewarding as a volunteer,” she says.
Stevandic also reinstituted an annual Mathletics competition in partnership with the Grand River Chapter and Western University. Through these competitions, she helps raise awareness of engineering and promotes the profession as an exciting career option to students.
The Order of Honour pays tribute to individuals who have rendered conspicuous service to the engineering profession. The rank of Member is bestowed upon those who have served the profession by contributing substantially to its operation or improvement in its status.
