As part of its regulatory mandate, PEO establishes, maintains and develops: standards of knowledge and skill; standards of practice for the profession; standards of professional ethics; and promotes public awareness of its role. Ontario professional engineers are part of a community of more than 87,500 PEO licence and certificate holders committed to enhancing the quality of life, safety and well-being in the province.
As Ontario’s engineering regulator, PEO relies heavily on its volunteers. More than 1,000 professional engineers, engineering interns and non-engineers volunteer their time each year on behalf of the association through their participation.
PEO's mandate, as described in the Professional Engineers Act, is to ensure that the public is protected and that individuals and companies providing engineering services uphold a strict code of professional ethics and conduct.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my validator need to be from the same discipline that I perform work in?
Ideally yes, but not necessarily. If the validator(s) can attest to your competencies and is familiar with your work, they may be an eligible validator. PEO reserves the right to determine the acceptability of validators.
I am familiar with a candidate’s work but did not take technical responsibility for their work. Am I an eligible validator?
Yes, as long as validators are sufficiently familiar with the candidate’s work and can confidently rate the competencies.
Why does work experience require a validator?
Validation assists in assuring to PEO that the licensing requirements set out in the Act and the regulations have been satisfied. Validation does not constitute a review of the applicant’s work experience, in Canada or internationally—it simply confirms that it was acquired.
What is the role of the validator?
A validator assesses and rates the applicant’s work experience. A validator must have direct, first-hand knowledge of the applicant’s work and must have provided suitable professional supervision of the applicant throughout the work period being validated and have taken technical responsibility for the applicant’s work. The validator may have a title other than supervisor and may be a manager, mentor, client or colleague.
What is the maximum/minimum number of validators required for an application?
There is no maximum number of validators. The minimum required is one.
Do I need to obtain engineering work experience before I can apply?
Yes. Under the new licence process that came into effect on May 15, 2023, all applicants must demonstrate both the academic and experience requirements before applying. All applicants must have a minimum of 48 months of acceptable engineering work experience, which must be demonstrated at the time of application through PEO’s competency-based assessment (CBA).
I was a pre-May 15th legacy applicant, but my past application was recently closed due to a missed deadline. Am I eligible to re-apply?

I am a legacy applicant who has satisfied the academic and NPPE requirements. I have recently accumulated 48 months of engineering experience. How do I submit my CBA experience information for assessment?

As a pre-May 15th legacy applicant, am I eligible to register for PEO’s optional Engineering Intern (EIT) program?
So long as you meet any assigned deadlines on your P.Eng. application, you are eligible to enrol in the EIT program. In order to do so, please submit your EIT request to [email protected] for review and processing. After the EIT annual fee is paid and processed, your EIT membership will become active.
How does PEO prioritize the processing of legacy vs new process applications?
We have two separate dedicated teams focused for each process without any favoritism towards any one process.
