EIT program changes FAQs

How is the EIT program being impacted by PEO’s licensing process changes?

The EIT program option will be suspended for new applicants as of May 15, 2023.

Why is the EIT program being suspended for new applicants?

The Professional Engineers Act and its regulations make the EIT program available only to those who have already applied for licensure. Applicants who apply under the new licensing process will receive a licensing decision on their application within six months as per PEO’s compliance to FARPACTA. Since the required work experience under the new (FARPACTA-compliant) licensing process must be acquired before applying, the EIT program, which is designed to assist applicants as they acquire the 48 months of acceptable engineering work experience, is no longer sustainable in its current form.

What happens to current EITs who applied before the licensing process changes take effect?

Current P.Eng. applicants are eligible to register for and/or renew their EIT membership so long as they continue their current licensing process and meet any deadlines assigned to their current P.Eng. application. These “grand-parented” EIT members may continue to use all EIT program benefits as long as they remain EITs or the rules change.

We are scheduled to launch our next Licensure Assistance Program (LAP) cohort in May. Can we still proceed?

Current EITs may continue to use all EIT program benefits including the LAP. So yes, you may proceed with your next (and future) cohorts until there are no remaining EITs in the system or the rules change.

Should we continue offering LAP for grand-parented EITs?

Yes. As long as you have grand-parented EIT members, you can continue offering LAP.

Will PEO offer something like a shortened version of the LAP to applicants? Are chapters involved?

There currently are no plans to offer anything similar to the LAP to new applicants.  However, this may be discussed in the future.

Will PEO provide an alternative to the EIT program?

We understand the value that the EIT designation holds for prospective applicants, as well as engineering employers and local chapters. As such, PEO will be consulting with our stakeholders to explore other options for prospective applicants looking to gain experience.
