Between August 8, 2023 and September 8, 2023, PEO conducted a brief survey to better understand how licence holders perceive various features of the PEAK mandatory CPD program. Survey results will also inform development of the program’s future features as we prepare to introduce compliance audits and potential administrative sanctions for non compliance in 2024. The survey was completed by approximately 15,500 respondents.
Survey Highlights:
- 51% of respondents have more than 21 years of engineering experience
- 88% of respondents completed CPD activities through informal education like reading, studying and attending workshops. Additionally, 58% of respondents mostly participated in informal education annually.
- 70% of respondents have engaged with PEAK program at least once in 2023.
- 72% agree that the criteria for admissible CPD should prioritize competence to practise professional engineering.
- 74% agree that CPD should also include some complementary CPD on topics such as project management, leadership and health and safety that supports core engineering practice activities.
- 80% agree that unverifiable CPD activities like reading and studying should be accepted, with 57% agreeing that simple proofs should be required for auditing purposes.
- 64% agree that they should engage in practice-specific CPD and 62% agree that CPD should be reported to PEO. Additionally 79% agree that a practice status declaration (annually declaring whether they are practising or not practising engineering) should be required as well as reporting any practice status changes promptly to PEO.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the 2023 PEAK survey. Further consultations about CPD will be forthcoming. Stakeholder consultations help ensure that the program is continuously improved and is responsive to input from a variety of sources, to meet the needs of licence holders while serving the public interest.
