Mississauga engineer honoured as a champion of promoting diversity in the profession

PRESS RELEASE

Toronto – (April 26, 2018) – To recognize her efforts to promote a more inclusive and diverse profession, Lisa MacCumber, P.Eng., of Mississauga, has been named a Member of the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) Order of Honour. She was inducted into the Order at an April 20 gala in Toronto.

MacCumber was inspired to volunteer with PEO after attending a presentation on women in engineering. The event prompted her to create the Mississauga Chapter’s Women in Engineering Committee, which hosted several networking and speaking events for female engineers. “The experience showed how enthusiasm and support from others could help to further the profession and make it more inclusive,” she says.

Since then, MacCumber has volunteered extensively with PEO and the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE). Her volunteer work with the Mississauga Chapter—including stints as chair, secretary and director—has fostered networking and community building with local engineers and engineering graduates. She has also served on PEO’s Chapter Leaders Conference Organizing Committee.

She was instrumental in developing the 2010 Survey of Workplace Conditions for Engineers—a report focusing on issues facing women in the profession. The report helps further her ongoing volunteer goal of achieving Engineers Canada’s 30 by 30 initiative. “I think it is important to continue to encourage women to pursue licensure,” she says.

MacCumber says one of her most rewarding volunteer experiences came about recently when PEO Council approved her 2017 AGM member submission to undertake a PEO governance review (and went on to form a working group to explore governance issues).

The Order of Honour pays tribute to individuals who have rendered conspicuous service to the engineering profession. The rank of Member is bestowed upon those who have served the profession by contributing substantially to its operation or improvement in its status.
