Toronto – (April 26, 2018) – A volunteer for more than two decades, Jeanette M. Southwood, P.Eng., FEC, FCAE, LLD (hc), IntPE, of Ottawa, has been named an Officer of the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) Order of Honour. She was inducted into the Order at a gala on April 20 in Toronto.
Southwood has served as a valued voice within the profession through more than two decades of volunteerism.
Beginning with PEO’s Willowdale-Thornhill Chapter executive, she created and chaired the Government Interface Committee, was secretary, served on the Certificate Presentation and Events committees, and chaired the Newsletter Committee.
She then joined PEO’s Awards Committee, where, as chair, she expanded the external honours program resulting in Ontario engineers becoming more widely recognized throughout the country.
In fact, Southwood says that “helping to have the work of fellow engineers and the contributions of the engineering profession recognized through honours such as the Order of Canada” has been one of her most rewarding experiences as a PEO volunteer.
Southwood herself has been recognized for her many contributions. Early in her career, she received the Engineering Medal in the Young Engineer category of the Ontario Professional Engineers Awards (OPEA). In 2015, she was presented with an OPEA Engineering Medal in the Engineering Excellence category. She has also been honoured with an Ontario Volunteer Service Award and the Women of Innovation Award. In 2014, she was named one of Canada’s Clean50 for her work as an influencer and leader dedicated to sustainable development.
In addition to her work with PEO, Southwood has volunteered with Consulting Engineers Ontario’s Member Service Committee and the Ontario Environment Industry Association Board, among many other engineering organizations.
The Order of Honour pays tribute to individuals who have rendered conspicuous service to the engineering profession. The rank of Officer is bestowed upon those who have served the profession for many years and whose sustained leadership has contributed greatly to its operation or improvement in its status.
