Ottawa Engineer Recognized by Profession for Dedicated Service to Enhance Disciplinary Responsibilities of Ontario Regulator

PRESS RELEASE

Toronto – (April 28, 2014) – For his vital contributions to the regulation of the engineering profession, Glenn Richardson, P.Eng., FEC, of Ottawa, has been named an Officer of the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) Order of Honour. He was inducted into the order at a gala on April 25 in Niagara Falls.

The high standards of professional practice and ethics in the profession can b e attributed, in part, to the indispensable service Richardson has provided as a member of PEO’s Discipline Committee for 17 years. During this time, he has been a leading contributor to improving one of PEO’s vital regulatory responsibilities.

The Discipline Committee convenes statutory tribunals to hear and decide on allegations of incompetence or professional misconduct against PEO licence or Certificate of Authorization holders. As chair from 2011 to 2014, Richardson has guided the committee through: revised rules and procedures; terms of reference; and work and human resource plans, all aimed at expediting the work of discipline panels while ensuring the process is clear and fair to all parties. He has trained and organized formal education sessions for these volunteers, and been instrumental in mentoring and encouraging them to realize their full potential as adjudicators.

Lauded for his ability to handle sensitive and contentious issues in a fair and balanced manner, Richardson has served as a panelist for more than 20 matters referred to Discipline. He chaired the panels in eight of the 13 matters he adjudicated between 2007 and 2011, and has been a valuable contributor to communicating case outcomes through the Decisions and Reasons published in t he Gazette section of Engineering Dimensions, the association’s official journal.

“Volunteering at PEO has afforded me the opportunity to learn and work with many outstanding people, and provided a means to give something back to our community,” says Richardson. “I encourage everyone to do the same in whatever way you can.”

The Order of Honour pays tribute to individuals who have rendered conspicuous service to the engineering profession. The rank of Officer is bestowed upon those who have served the profession for many years and whose sustained leadership has contributed greatly to its operation or improvement in its status.
