Applicants who do not have an undergraduate degree in engineering from a program accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) and meet PEO's minimum academic qualifications may be assigned a confirmatory exam program (CEP) to confirm they have the equivalent knowledge.
The CEP consists of three technical exams and one complementary studies exam. It allows the applicant to confirm that they have obtained the equivalent education qualifications to satisfy PEO’s academic requirements for licensure in the assessed discipline.
Applicants who have been assigned a CEP and have obtained at least five years of engineering experience from their bachelor’s conferral date may have their applications forwarded to PEO’s Experience Requirements Committee (ERC) for review. The ERC will determine whether the technical exam program can be waived or reduced or if the program stands.
Interviews with the ERC to assess the possibility of waiving assigned confirmatory exams are optional. Applicants may choose to write the corresponding exam programs without attending ERC interviews. Learn more about the Experience Assessment for PEO’s Academic Requirements.
Applicants referred to the Experience Assessment Department must submit their experience documents in the required format by an assigned deadline. Applicants who do not submit the documentation needed by the assigned deadline will forfeit the opportunity to have their experience assessed and will be required to start the exam program by the designated deadline. Applicants who do not begin their exam program by the assigned deadline will have their P.Eng. application withdrawn.
Applicants who meet the Good Performance Criteria may have a portion of their assigned exam program waived (see PEO Technical Exam Policy).
Applicants assigned a CEP cannot take a course in lieu of an assigned exam.
PEO offers technical exams online with remote proctoring twice annually (in spring and winter). PEO will send applicants assigned exam information, including when they may begin writing, the time limits for completing an exam program and other guidelines. Please note that PEO may close the applications of applicants who do not adhere to the strict time limits in PEO’s governing legislation.
Confirmatory Exam Programs by Discipline
Toronto Metropolitan University’s Internationally Educated Engineers Qualification Bridging Program (IEEQB)
Applicants assigned a confirmatory exam program (CEP) in a designated engineering discipline with PEO have the option of enrolling in the Internationally Educated Engineers Qualification Bridging (IEEQB) program operated by Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). The IEEQB program includes courses from accredited engineering undergraduate programs that cover the content of the CEP in the assessed discipline. Applicants who complete TMU’s IEEQB program will satisfy their CEP with PEO.
Applicants who do not complete the IEEQB program must pass PEO’s confirmatory exam program.
The minimum passing grade to fulfill the academic requirements for licensure for each TMU IEEQB course is 60%.
The PEO confirmatory disciplines available with TMU's IEEQB Program include:
- Biomedical Engineering
- Chemical Engineering
- Civil Engineering
- Computer Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Environmental Engineering
- Geomatics Engineering
- Industrial Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Structural Engineering
- Transportation Engineering
- Water Resources Engineering
See TMU’s IEEQB program brochure for more information.
